I design connected hardware and the software it requires to be useful.
I'm Sky Sequoia, an independent engineer and developer based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Clients typically engage me when a product spans disciplines that would otherwise require several vendors: a device that needs firmware, an application, and a server behind it; a system with substantial business logic; or a manual process that could be handled by dependable software or a well-supervised AI.
Services
Engineering
I take embedded devices from the first breadboard to a unit that holds up in the field: firmware, electronics, enclosure, and the application or server at the other end of the link. Hardware is unforgiving. Power, memory, and connectivity are always constrained, and a fault in a deployed device is costly to correct. The rigor that demands is fundamental to everything I build, and it is the reason the software I write respects the hardware it runs on.
Rapid & one-off prototyping
Rapid prototypes and one-off builds are where most projects begin, and where some of them are meant to end: a proof of concept, a demonstration unit, a test fixture, or a single device built for a single purpose. I move quickly from an idea to a working unit through bench bring-up, test firmware, and 3D-printed enclosures, so there is something real to evaluate before anyone commits to a production run.
Connected devices
Sensors and compact Linux appliances on Raspberry Pi class boards, together with the mobile application, dashboard, or server to which they report.
Firmware
Embedded C on Nordic nRF52 and ESP32, Zephyr RTOS, Bluetooth Low Energy, and power-conscious design for devices that must operate unattended.
Positioning & RF
GPS and multi-constellation GNSS receivers, data logging, signal simulation, and software-defined radio.
Reverse engineering & exploitation
Hardware and software reverse engineering: firmware extraction and analysis, debug and serial interfaces, undocumented protocols, and binary analysis. Exploitation covers vulnerability research and proof-of-concept exploits for authorized assessments, and it informs how I harden the devices I build.
Development
Web and mobile applications and the servers that support them. Much of this work is unglamorous and must be correct: registration and payment systems, renewal reminders, administrative tools, and data that must remain synchronized with an organization's existing spreadsheets.
Python, JavaScript, Go, Flutter, Linux, AWS
AI integration
Applying language models within real products and workflows: assistants that answer from your own documents, tools that read and route incoming email and form submissions, and automation for the repetitive portions of a job. A model is treated like any other component. It is tested, it is given guardrails, and a person remains responsible for anything of consequence.
Design
Interfaces, websites, and identity for the products I build and for small businesses and organizations. Because I design what I build, the design you approve is the product that ships.
Working together
You work with me directly, from the first conversation through the final handoff. I begin by documenting what we are building and what it will require, in plain language. I then deliver a rough, working version early, because that is when feedback is most useful.
